Unstyled A John Deere with Behlen Overdrive

I bought on like that back in 1991 that had a broken key way, I repaired it mainly just to see how fast they really were,,about 21MPH, with hardly any power to go up a hill,,when my son drove it down past the house it looked like every time the engine popped off the wheel turn 5 times...

26 if you mash on the governor 8)

....and you'd better have tight steering gears anywhere north of 15 mph!!! You may end up changing your underwear.

Tim your comments always make me laugh :) and they ring true as a bell. I drove one last summer, it made so much gear racket I could barely hear the motor!

LOL. I know some older guys that would disable the high range lock out for reverse & run it in reverse high from field to field, routinely. Its like 6th gear.

I drove a 1937 A with the overdrive kit from 1958 to 1965 when I was a kid on the farm in Iowa. We used the old A with two row cultivator in the summer and to haul wagons of oats, bean, hay and corn the rest of year. I was the fastest tractor we had compared to an Oliver 70, Allis Chalmers WD45, and Super C Farmall. It gave you 5th and 6th gears. The main transmission would be in neutral that the 5/6 lever flipped to the left to engage. It would barely start a load of beans in 5th. We would usually start the load moving in 4th to build up speed and then when coasting, put main transmission in neutral and engage 5th gear and then put Hi/low selector in Low. This gave you 5th gear. After up to speed we'd put hi/lo shifter in Hi and you had 6th gear. The old girl would go very fast on the road. On a steep hill you could expect to down shift to 5th to clear the hill. For a really fast trip you could put your foot on the governor to build up speed and a head of steam to get up the hill further and possibly not shift.
