tim s, you were right

I pulled the right side axle housing off a jd 4440 powershift, the diff bearing does look a little bad. The race does show some spalling, not much, but some.
So looks like im replacing that bearing.
I'm a newbie to alot if this,
I need to check how much the diff moves and get the correct shims.
I dont need to check blacklash do i?

What's the best way to remove old bearing? I dont have a puller small enough.

You need to measure the free play then shim to correct preload.
If there is not correct backlash between pinion gear then you have to move differential over to obtain that.

I found the specs for the backlash .008-.015
What is the specs for the diff bearing preload?
Thanks

About .005 pre-load is what most bearings need, but this is hard to determain some times, re-install with the shims that you had to start with and see what it feels like, since you did not have a complete bearing failure you should be okay the replacement bearings are usually the same specs so the shim amount would be close, if any thing "maybe " remove one thin shim,, becareful as you re tighten the quill and don't break it,, if the shims are too few..that casting won't flex much, so don't smack it up fast with an air wrench..mail me if you want to talk about it [email protected]

Hey johndeeregreen ----- I found a post where you had oil in the coolant on a 317 skid loader. What ended up being the issue on that one. I just found the same on mine yesterday.
