Finally got the wallflower out of the corner of the shop! This is the last of the winter projects! Yaaay! It's been in there since late last September when the sliding PTO drive gear wore through the first reduction cover because the bearing behind it slid out of the main case. The two bolt cast piece that holds the bearing in place broke allowing the bearing to work out. It broke because yours truly was in a hurry and crunched the PTO in gear years ago, putting a shock on the bevel gears, forcing them apart and creating more end play force than the bearing holder could stand. It took this long to finally do the fatal damage to the first reduction cover. Bevel gears are fine and smooth and all bearings are OK so I didn't need to dig deep into the bowels of the tranny to replace anything. This is the first time the PTO Has been quiet since I don't remember when. I did a few other things like crankshaft seals, new gasket between transmission and rear end rebuilt the shift forks and a few electrical odds and ends. Next winter the back end comes off for new axle seals and while I'm there new PTO Clutch and seals. Eventually it will be back in the shape it was in when dad bought it new.

Im sure it's glad to be out in the sunshine too!, sounds like you had your fair share of work behind that first reduction cover. I've done axle seals on a few of my letter series, it wasn't a bad job just messy.

Today after this picture I put the 10 foot 3 point hitch field cultivator on it and worked up ground for a waterway, plus other odds and ends on some end rows and it did act like it was enjoying the sunshine. Ran about a half tank of fuel through it and it ran like a new tractor. I'm happy with the outcome. Oh yes, one other thing I did while it was apart. I rotated the flywheel ring gear a twitch. Its still worn pretty bad but this rotating will stall off the inevitable.

Last Saturday it was 70 here so I decided to wake a couple of my tractors from their winter naps. The "52's" my John Deere A and Farmall M (both 52 models) started on the second revolution of the engine after sleeping since late October! My father in law even came out and started his 630, it took off on the second revolution. He was surprised it started so quick, last year I replaced the two 6 volt batteries with one 12 volt boy did that make a difference!

I ran the 52's out and let them bask in the warm sun for a couple hours, heck I even hooked them to the three section drag and worked the yard for some play time, sad thing is we got three inches of snow here today. So in the shed they will stay until this cleared up.
