MT gasket sealant

I'm in the process of replacing the rear seal and oil pan gasket on my MT. I am wondering if I should use some kind of gasket sealant on the pan gasket on the ends where it mates with the timing cover and the plate that holds the seal, there isn't any bolts in those spots to hold the gasket. What is the best way to install it so I don't have leaks again?
Thanks,
John

I replaced my oil pan gasket a few years after cleaning out the oil pan and checking the screen on the pump. I used the JD gasket sealer, much like indian head gasket shellac. Put a coating on the pan, the block, and both sides oteh gasket, I then used a torque wrench and set the bolts at 30 ft. lbs. and worked from side to side to tighten. Has not leaked a drop for me. I know some guys don't like the gasket sealer, and it is kinda messy, but if applied to a clean surface and correctly it does help keep away leaks.
