420 Radiator Overflow

MS-420T

New User
The other day I ran my 420T under load for the first time in a long time, and after a while, the coolant that I topped off prior began pouring out of the overflow tube. It stopped dumping after it lost a quart give or take, but the cooling function appears to work fine based on the water temperature gauge readings. Obviously these tractors don't have an overflow tank that fills when hot and empties when cold, so do you just run them with less coolant in them? When servicing the coolant system is it normal to top it off and let it dump the excess when it heats up?

The <a href="http://www.tractordata.com/farm-tractors/000/0/4/46-john-deere-420-engine.html">cooling system capacity</a> on your 420 is 11 quarts.

You might consider draining the system and refilling with 11 quarts of coolant.

If there is still an overflow after it heats up, then you might consider draining the system again.

Before draining again, measure the level in the top of the radiator, and make note of the reading.

Drain the radiator, measure the amount of remaining coolant, and then make note of the quantity.

Hope this helps.

I think its been said that after the initial blow off of coolant if the level remains constant and is still above the tubes in the core its fine. Bill

I suspected it was probably fine given that the system was cooling like it should. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. Thanks.
