John Deere 1020 brakes

Got a John Deere 1020 gas. The brakes worked fine and then it sat over winter and the pedals got stiff. When you pushed down on the brake peddles they didnt go very far down, the brakes still worked but the peddles had very little play in them. When you let off the brakes the tractor would move in low gears but would not roll freely. The two bolts were taken off the bottom near the plungers and some fluid came out and the brakes went to working fine. A few days later the same thing happened but this time by the time I got the wrench to drain the box by the plunges the brakes worked again. Any idea what is going on

Thanks

I have a 1020 also and blamed the hard brakes in the winter and them hanging up on water freezing in the hydraulic oil. I bent the inlet check valves in mine when I forced the pedals down one once and ended up with no brakes. If I ran a torpedo heater to heat the brake valve up for about 5-10 minutes pedals would be normal. Otherwise I would have two locked up wheels from the water freezing and expanding putting the brakes on. I'm not sure what you are draining by the plungers. This has been my experience. About 2 weeks ago, I drained all the hydraulic oil and removed the brake valve. I tore it completely apart to fix the no brake issue to find a pile of junk in the valve. I cleaned it up and replaced the inlet check valves. I removed the bleed screw son the brake housings and blew out all the fluid I could get. It hasn't been cold enough since then to see if my brakes freeze up now. Most likely water got into the hydraulic oil from the gear shifter boots. Hope this helps some

It does, the bolts I am talking about that are taken out and fluid drains out are at the bottom of the box the brake plungers go into. I am sure there are valves in there, but at the bottom there are two bolts one for each brake that you can take out

If you choose to bleed brakes why not open bleeder(parts key 10) on the top of axle housing in lieu of draining brake valve housing??
