I overhauled my sons 39 B I had picked up a nos head gasket . It leaked took it apart I installed it wrong . So how much is a r521491gasket gonna set me back ?

You could use Copper Kote or aluminum spray paint and reinstall making sure it's torqued correctly. Then re-torque after it has run and warmed up once.

I was gonna say the same thing, but erred on the side of caution.

The subject got a fairly good BASHING by "experts" in a recent thread.

Well I'm a dumb a$$ I sprayed copper coat installed it and it leaked . It had run some but never good and warmed up . I had antifreeze in the oil !! The head and block were shaved to true them up one push rod tube replaced rest looked good . Head was still tight so I left the antifreeze in it can't see any leaks . Took head off it gasket was on backwards and it just fell apart . It split right open . Now I'm looking for anything else that could be wrong .don't want to install a new gasket and go through this again .
Oh ya it ran pretty good before the overhaul with no leaks .

Doubt the gasket was leaking, many are installed backward without an issue. Most likely a pushrod tube, as most head gasket leaks don't put water into the oil anyway. Have the head magnafluxed for cracks- a good shop would do this automatically before ever touching any head they get in- then pressure test it with a few psi to check the pushrod tubes. Could either be the new one not sealing or the old one leaking. Also check the top of block & upper 2" of cylinder bores for cracks.

I too have seen several installed backwards that did not have issues. Engines were torn down for overhaul or tractor was just parted out, or stuck.
I have also had a few where everything should of been right and the gasket still wanted to seep.
I do not like the design of these gaskets. The originals were better as they had roll crimps around all the passages and asbestos in the middle which was softer than the hard material used now.
I wish they would engineer them like automotive head gaskets of the no retorque design.

Mike it was like the old style but the water ports weren't rolled . getting the head pressure tested and maged . well see what I have .
