Break a tie for me.

I have an early (SN2222) 4640. I replaced both blower motors two years ago, and now one runs only on high and the other not at all. One guy told me that because they run in a series, the one that runs only on high is bad. Another guy told me the one that does not run at all is bad.
Who should I believe?

I don't know the specifics of that set up, but
in general theory if the two motors are truly
in series, and one is bad nothing should run.

What you state sounds impossible to me, but
then as I said, I don't know the specifics of
how the whole system is wired.

Should be reasonably easy to find the problem
for some one savvy with DC circuitry and has a
good multimeter.

I have a multimeter but am sorely lacking savvy.

I'm thinking it the one that does not run at all,
but I've been wrong on these before, and quickly
corrected here.

If it were me, I'd take it out and try to run it
with the battery charger.

The blower motors currently available from Deere
don't last like the originals. Anybody have a
better source???

Ron, that system uses a fancy switch that connects the motors in series for "low" and in parallel for "high".

The motor that runs is obviously "good", and the reason the other motor doesn't run could range from a bad motor, to wiring problems, to a bad switch.

Have had two like that and it was the switch both times. As a test, it is fairly easy to find the leads to the motor that you feel is not working. Simply jump 12v to it right where it's at and see if it works or not. Then at least you'd know if it was the motor or not.

This is from a 4430 tech manual but it might hlp you

My 4030 has an occasional bad connection in a connector in the wiring harness. On it the motors are in series on low speed and in parallel on high. On my 4030 the power for the blower motors is taken off the wiper switches, so when the bad connection acts up I have no low speed on the fans and no right windshield wiper. Better get a wiring diagram.

I disconnected the fans from the harness and hooked them to a battery charger. They both ran fine. I guess I'll replace the switch and see what happens. The fans shouldn't be bad yet, I doubt they have a hundred hours on them.

:) Knowing what you don't know is the first sign of extreme intelligence I would say.

Here is diagram of a standard Double Pole, Double Throw (DPDT) switch wired to create a series/parallel circuit for turning two 12 volt batteries into a 24 volt source. You can sub the fan motors for the batteries and put power in at the output to make your substitute switch on the cheap. You'll have to have the top motor return it's ground wire to the switch though, the other motor can ground to the tractor frame where it's mounted. View it as an old school knife switch with the center contacts either connected both at the same time to the left or to the right, in the left position it delivers 24 volts and would be the low fan position. To the right is 12 volts using batteries or the high fan position using fan motors.

Not fancy, just a bit tricky. If you want this as an on/off switch in combination with the two speeds, you'll need a center off DPDT with three detent positions. Also called on-off-on, it's still technically a double throw switch. Just has a hold to do nothing position in the middle.

Just went out and checked and the left windshield wiper isn't working either. Perhaps I'm on to something.

Take the LH cover off of the steering pedestal for access to the circuit breaker panelvand check for power leaving both breakers that feed the fans, wipers and radio.

One may be bad, or there may be a loose/overheated connected at the breaker. VERY common.

(quoted from post at 10:08:54 03/10/15) they make a kit to change your motors to 3 speed...

The kit says its for 30 and 40 series, I wonder if there is one for the 50 series.

Wouldn't a 50 series already have a three speed?

It has three speeds but I was always told not to run it on the purge setting for long.

I finally got a JD tech to help me figure out the problem and it turned out to be an electrical coupler behind the right battery.
The JD guy said it was an unnecessarily complicated system. Two motors working in series on low and parallel on high (or is it the other way around?) and it gets its electricity from two different circuits.
