Soldering a field stud to the windings.

I need to know the best way to solder a field stud to the windings connection on the outer windings housing on a JD Delco starter. Should I use a soldering gun or pencil torch? What type of solder should I use..flux or non flux? Should I heat the stud up first or not? How would you guys do it and what materials would you use for the best connection. I know it needs a good connection to handle the volts and amps.

Thanks in advance!!

I use a micro torch to solder a stud on starter field windings. Make sure you have cleaned the connection very well before starting. Pre-tin the stud. I try to never use acid in soldering electrical connections, resin core solder works very well.

Tinning means to put a thin layer of solder on the stud before you do the final soldering job. A pre tinned stud will solder to the windings much quicker and with less heat.

Thats the easy way. On Lucas starter rebuilds i use silver solder to withstand high temperatures.

I always use an old fashion soldering copper. It holds a lot of heat. I also clamp a small pair of vice grips on the heavy winding for a heat sink. It stops the field coil from absorbing as much heat away from where you want it.
