pony engagement

finally got the pony installed and running real
good,it engages just fine and really spins the big
engine fast. my problem is after the diesel starts
there is a slight grinding sound. if i shut the
pony off it stops immediately. i can push forward
on the engagement lever and it will stop grinding.
any ideas?

Reviewed the Operator's Manual OM-R2032R under the [b:654c4848f0]STARTING THE DIESEL ENGINE[/b:654c4848f0] topic on page 29.

The last paragraph at the bottom of the page states:

"[b:654c4848f0][i:654c4848f0]As soon as the diesel engine starts and runs, push starting control lever forward to neutral. CAUTION: Do not push lever beyond neutral.[/i:654c4848f0][/b:654c4848f0]"

Just continue to push the starting control lever forward into neutral and then shut down the pony motor.

Hope this helps.

James, you don't suppose the linkage is out of adjustment and not letting the starter drive gear retract far enough? Just an Idea. Jim

Yes, you have a good idea.

When we first got our diesel tractor, the starter drive gear would not completely engage.

Adjusted the linkage, but did not make note of the measurements.

Correction.

Should have stated [b:654c4848f0]transmission sliding pinion[/b:654c4848f0] instead of the starter drive gear.
