pony plug wires

Use a taper punch or some such thing to spread the ends a little bit and they will fit just fine.

Depends. There are two coil styles and two spark plug styles. They don't mix.
Do the coils have a pointy post or a spring loaded clip retainer?
Are the plug wires with or without a metal crimped end?

the coils only have about a 3/4 inch deep hole
which the the wires fit very loosely in. the wires
kind of have a thin bullet type end.

Without seeing images I suspect you have the cheaply pointed post coil and the premium plug wires that are supposed to be held into the coil with a spring clip inside the coil.
Mixing new coils and wires has frustrated many unsuspecting fixers .and caused a significant percent of electric start conversions when nothing was actually wrong.
