4440 Battery change over

Has anybody done the change over from 2 6 volts to 2 12volts on a 4440? Do you hook the two positives together and to the starter and then do the grounds need hooked together or just ground each battery? Any help would be great. Thanks
 
It's that's what you want to do, it ain't rocket surgery.

NO reason to connect the grounds together... just use a short heavy-gauge cable to a chassis bolt near each battery. (Actually you would just need to add one at the LH SIDE.)

You can use the existing LH battery (+) wire, and run a good new one from the RH battery all the way to the starter solenoid.
 
I have changed many. I use Deere's cables from 55 series tractors. The difference is that I install the ground cable backwards to connect to a starter mounting bolt. Use group 31 batteries.
I have seen others burn up their tractors using shop made cables without the plastic conduit that Deere has.
 
Is this a tractor you cold start every day, or does it sit the winter and get used spring summer fall? I switched my 4430 to one 12v battery because it seldom gets started in the winter. Even so, It will start down to 0 degrees if plugged in for a couple hours. Batteries today are much better than batteries when these tractors were new. One battery has half the chance of trouble versus two batteries.
 
I have done two a 4040 and a 4640 the 4440 will be done this spring in both cases I replaced all battery cables and ends as usually by the time you get to this project you're due for new cables anyway positive to positive to starter negative to negative to ground have been very happy with the results bought a 4020 this winter that had been converted to 12v but they only used one battery that will be changed come spring it gets mighty cold up here in central Maine
 
Did it to the 4450, best decision ever made! Plug it in for a hour or so before going to blow snow and she spins over like its 80 degrees out.
