Service on a 830 vs 4010

Hello,
If you had to do ALL the work yourself with good mechanical knowledge would you pick a 830 two cylinder or a 4010 when it comes to any major work? I count clutch, engine overhaul and so on as major. Thanks

David,

Having been into an 80, 70 and 720,but not into a 4010, I think the work would be easier on the 4010. The 2 cylinder diesels have some heavy components to lift, tight spaces to work in and big bolts to torque. It is possible to get a crankshaft out without removing the pistons from a 2 cylinder, but better count on two stout men to lift, turn, twist and cuss. Parts for the 2 cylinders are available, but not cheap and are hard to find. Probably a more collectable tractor than the 4010, but not as usable if you are planning on using it. There are also some concerns about the 2 cylinder diesels like the flywheel being run loose on the crankshaft. The center main bearing oil line can become smashed when end play is too loose and clutch adjusted too tight. Result is oil starvation to the bearing, a damaged main bearing and or crankshaft and a slow death when the engine warms that may or may not free up when the engine cools.

Two cylinders can be simpler, but the there are more parts options for NG tractors... like rebuilt hyd pumps, power steering units, etc.

There is definitely less need to split a two cylinder!

Clutch & Trans are much easier on a 830, engine easier on a
4010. 4010 is easier to find parts for slightly, but not cheaper.
The controls are much harder to repair on a 4010. The fuel
system is much more durable on an 830. 830's do not have
the loose flywheel issues like the 70/720/730's do- I've never
even heard of one. Brakes are much harder & more expensive
on the 4010.

I found a nice 4010d but it has a leak up front which appears to be hydraulic fluid and another on the remote pump on the left side by the counsel. Not having worked on a new gen i am worried that those issues maybe very expensive and hard to fix. Am i right or is it easy to do that kind of work?

The leaks are repairable, the front leak could be oil cooler hose, steering line, or hydraulic pump.if it's the front pump they can be re-sealed, but a little ornery to get down out, we can help you with it when the time comes, like anything it will need to be determined just where the leak is, before the repair can be made.
