'39 B question

My '39 B appears to be leaking gear oil from between the rear axle housing and the transmission housing. I'm assuming the gasket needs replacing. I've got the rear cover off and the PTO shaft out (for another repair). Are there any other physical connections between the gears in the transmission and the gears in the rear end (other than their meshing together)? Or can I unbolt it and just roll the rear axle away from the rest of the tractor? The rear wheels are still on it.

Yes, you can just unbolt and split from this point. Just make sure it is supported very well on the front so it doesn't tip over. I have a couple of stands that I have made that bolt to the back of the frame on each side. They are made with trailer jacks so that I can adjust the level and height when bolting back together. Also, be very aware of the 2 alignment dowels. I have seen tractors that have been split before and the dowels were not lined up correctly and got pushed out when it was bolted together. It had been run several years that way and ended up leaking like yours because you couldn't keep the bolts tight. Good luck and be careful!!!
