2240 Electrical Question

The wiring diagram from the Technical Manual for 2040 and 2240 (from 01Nov1980) shows nothing connected to the G terminal of the key switch. In the description of the key switch, however, it is said that on start position, there is continuity between the G terminal of the key switch and the ground. How can this be achieved if there is no wire connected to the G terminal?

The body of the switch provides the "ground", provided it it cleanly attached to a grounded metal panel.

What is then the purpose of the G terminal on the key switch? - please see Fig. 7 attached. Should the G terminal be attached to anything?

The Technical Manuals (please see also the 1975 manual for 2240, which explains a bit clearer the "start position") state that in the "start position" there is continuity between the G terminal and ground. I would understand from this that there should be no continuity between the G terminal and ground when not in "start position".

If the body of the switch provides the continuity to ground, this continuity would be always, not only in the "start position".

That ign switch AR58126 fits a very long list of different JD tractors therefore the "G" post could be utilized for a different model tractor than your 2240.

I then wonder why does the Technical Manuals say that in the "start sequence" there is continuity between the G terminal and ground, while there is no wire attached to the ground? - please see the wire diagram from the Technical Manual where I there is no wire connected to the G terminal.

Is there a contradiction in the JD Technical Manual between the wiring diagram (attached) and the description of the "start position"? What would the grounding of G terminal accomplish?

Likely, the "G" terminal is used in some applications for an instrument lamp test feature.

Since nothing is connected to it for your application, I wouldn't think you need to worry about it.

As was mentioned by Bob, the "G" terminal is used as a momentary parallel ground circuit to test some indicator lamps during "cranking", such as the air filter restriction lamp. Unlike the "OIL" and "AMP" lamp circuits which are normally closed when the engine is not running, the air filter lamp vacuum switch is normally open, and is closed only when vacuum in the air intake closes the switch. I did not find that this test circuit was used on the 2240, but it was used on the 2520 and larger Waterloo tractors.

I saw your JD 2040 wiring diagram. I just purchased a 1981 vintage JD 2040 today where the owner had passed away and the son was selling it. The instrument cluster covers were missing therefore someone has probably tampered with the wiring in the instrument cluster. I got it at a really good price because it has multiple "problems". I finally got it started, but it would not cut off with the key. My Case 380CK diesel has a mechanical lever that cuts off the fuel, whereas, this JD 2040 (i assume) has an electric fuel shut off. After searching for several minutes (in the snow and it was dark) for a fuel shut off and removing several wires from the key switch, I finally put it in high gear and popped the clutch to stall it. Before I put this tractor on a trailer, I would like to get a clearer wiring diagram where the key components are actually labeled so I can figure out how to stop the engine once it is on a trailer. Can you assist with a few more wiring diagrams? Once I get it towed back to my house (200 miles away) I will get a full manual from JD. I intend to restore this tractor and put it back in excellent condition.

I have a Case 380CK that I purchased that had the instrument cluster completely disconnected and miswired. I rewired and restored (new gauges, new connectors, disassembled and repaired all switches, new paint) the entire instrument cluster of my Case using the factory manual I have. I have also sent wiring schematics other Case owners around the world that have have asked for my assistance. (See Case 380CK forum) Can you assist with additional wiring diagrams for the JD 2040?

Thanks Jim, I think the cable is probably broken off and frozen in the "fuel on" position, because it was not anywhere to be found. There was nothing to release or push in to kill the fuel. I just turned the key and it started once I put a battery into it. I looked around the fuel injection pump to see if there was a cable or lever I could move to cut off the fuel, but only saw the throttle cable. The guy I bought from did not know anything about it since it was his fathers. As I said, I knew the tractor had "issues" when I bought it and I knew that once i got it home, I could easily repair any problems it had. I just need to get it on a trailer so that I can give it some much needed TLC.

JDs are new to me. I just need to learn the JD location of everything. Trying to do this in the dark, in the cold and with snow on the ground, didn't help, thus my assumption that this model had an electric fuel shutoff.
