John Deere restoration paint color (green and hellow)

I just purchased a John Deere WA 14. It was # 17 of 23 manufactured. I was told the paint used on this tractor is a different green than the JD green used today. If that's true, can someone point me to where I can purchase the paint color used? The original paint color looks a little darker and less bright.

Congratulations on the purchase.
Ask whoever told you about the paint color to prove it. I'd just paint it ag green and get on with my life. If anyone tries to tell you it is wrong tell them they can paint [i:dd0ee60fe3]their[/i:dd0ee60fe3] WA14 whatever color they want.

I'd look for a spot that hasn't seen the sun...
like under the hood or something like that. Shine
it up, and see if it looks like Deere green, or
something different.

Has JD green always been the exact same color as it is today, or has it been modified through the years? In other words, when someone restores a 1940's or 1950's JD, do they use the exact same JD color that is commercially available today at JD dealers, and that is used to paint new JD equipment today? Or is it a slight variation?

well, i dont know if the green and yellow has changed from "then" to "now" but back in the day i dont think they had clearcoat, and they seem to always use it today, has a brighter look to it. a old '49 "A" i recently got going again i sprayed off the dust and clearcoated the original paint. (with aresol clear spray) looks alot better without looking too "new". i cant really picture the old iron of yesterday having the same finish as the stuff as whats still made today.
with something as rare as what you have, exact color is a non-issue...just dont paint it oliver green and minnie-mo yellow...

Do like "CoonieMoonie" said down a few. Find something under the hood or somewhere sheltered from sun etc and polish it up and either match it up at local auto store to infinite color shades chart or have them do a computer scan read out on it for a formula. Then you know it's correct for "your"tractor. Twenty three made but over what period of time?? The chances of all 23 being the same are not good and chances they matched production JD,s back then , even less.

Deere sells two versions, Classic and Ag. When comparing the two, to me the Classic is a little more blue and not as shiney but if I were to see two tractors sitting side by side one painted Classic and one painted Ag I might not be able to tell the difference.

How either compares to Valspar I have no idea.

Shades varied over the years as did suppliers.
I've seen different shades between cans depending upon lot numbers painting the same tractor.
That was back when.... paint is more accurately mixed today.
I would not take a chance on custom mixed paint. They can only mix a gallon at a time. Ask any auto paint shop how hard it is to get a match.
