I am assuming PTO brake when it is cold it will barely turn when warm turns .I have not seen this tractor but owner seems to think it could be it valve bodies according to his JD mechanic who they are going to have check it out to see.Is this possible?

My guess is it's a power shift, and it will require a double split to repair it, and it should be fixed, foe safety reasons if none else..

Faulty valve body sounds better to prospective tractor purchaser than a ''double split''. I doubt the problem is faulty valve body.

I agree. It's always a simple fix to a seller. But a lot of times, it's worse case scenerio and probably requires the double split. If it were that easy to fix, he probably would have done it already. Only tractor I ever bought that had a pto that wouldn't shut off, cost me 2k to fix. So lesson learned, won't do that again. Either get a huge discount or walk away. Unless he's willing to have it fixed, then you buy it.

my "2 cents" IF,,, you can stop the stub shaft with your foot, i have found you can cut 1/4 inch off the pto brake check valve SPRING. this is located at the bottom of the traction clutch valve assy. i do not know how to post a picture, so will explain. below the traction valve you will see a 3/8" steel line attached to a 45 degree fitting coming out of the main housing. when you detach from this 45 fitting the other end simply slides into the bottom of a hex fitting, this is the pto brake check valve. unscrew this vertical fitting and a ball & spring will fall out. snip 1/4" off this spring. this has worked for me several times in the last 40+ years. PS. IF,,, your foot don't stop pto, this won't work in your case.

Use a 2X4, not your foot ;^)..It's a big job to replace the PTO brake, requires a double split and holding the cab up for the second one,, I have some pics on the last one I did,, but I can't find them,,Darn it

I bought a 4020 with that problem and your foot would not stop it. All it was was 5 or more gallons of dirt in the dash that had broke a rod for the pto lever. Might not always work that way but some times it's worth looking into before you walk away.
