'46 A generator

Did the 46 A's come with a generator standard , or where they an option? Our A didn't have a generator on it when we got it. I'm thinking of putting one on it. If they came with out a generator I think I will leave it the way it is. Also the tin is pretty rough. What are the chances of finding a good hood? Dale

Sure some came without a generator??
Some came without starters so there wasn't
a need for a generator.....

Reviewed two Operator's Manuals, No. OM-RAI-945 dated September 1945 and OM -R2000R.

Under the [b:654c4848f0]THE ELECTRIC GENERATOR[/b:654c4848f0] topic on pages 50 and 52, it states:

"[b:654c4848f0][i:654c4848f0]The purpose of the generator is to supply current for lights and keep the battery in a charged condition by replacing in the battery energy consumed by the starting motor in starting.[/i:654c4848f0][/b:654c4848f0]"

Our 46A came with a generator, lights, and starting motor.

It also has the long hood to accommodate the battery.

Both operator's manual also have the [b:654c4848f0]ENGINE CRANKING[/b:654c4848f0] topic on page 10.

The is a paragraph titled [b:654c4848f0]Hand Cranking[/b:654c4848f0] and other paragraph titled [b:654c4848f0]Electric Starting[/b:654c4848f0].

If your tractor has a "short" hood with no battery compartment, lights, or starting motor, then it probably did not come with a generator,

It will probably be a hand start tractor.

Hope this helps.

James our A looks to be the same set-up as yours. It was an all fuel with two fuel tanks. It has a battery start. I just thought some electric starts didn't come with a generator. Over the years someone must of took the generator off the tractor. The side panels for the battery are long gone. They seem to be easy to come by for a price. Me and the kids will have to go to some salvage yards this spring if the weather ever warms up. It was 10 bellow this morning.
We are working on a couple of old '49 and '50 ford pick-ups that need some tin also. Half the fun of getting these old machines going is hunting for parts. Thanks for the info. Dale

Good thing about these old tractors is that you can usually find the parts for a price.

Good luck with both your tractor and trucks.
