I have a 1957 420 John Deere tractor. It has a add on frt bucket with the hyd pump hooked to the motor. What kind of hyd oil should I use. The tag is not very readable. Possibly Henry Manufacture. model-1S81 serial- 5539

The operator's manual for both the MT and 40 recommend 10W oil for the Touch-O-Matic.

This should also work in your 420 for the front bucket.

From that time frame it probably used 10wt or 20wt non detergent motor oil at the beginning. Hyguard or utf would work fine but you have to worry about leaks when changing oil types as modern oils have detergents in them. If you change all the seals it won't matter. Do drain it all before you put in your choice.

If I'm remembering right, Henry loaders used there own self-contained Hyd. system, Not tractor hyd. I'd used a R&O type hyd. oil, Its similar to a straight weight NonD. engine oil, Hyd. system will work best if viscosity of oil is matched to outside tem. aw32 (10w) Cold winter, aw46 (20w) Spring-fall 50F. ave.; aw100 (30w+) Hot summer... aw = anti-ware , some have anti-corrosion too...

If you don't mind a drip or three use TSC or NAPA All-Purpose
hydraulic fluid.
If $$ is no concern see your John Deere dealer about Hy-Gard.
