3020D synchro range transmission issue

Neighbor has a 3020 diesel with synchro range transmission. He's having problems with it staying in reverse. Both 3 and 5. Says he has to really "hunt" for both reverse gears. Once it's in reverse it moves about 3 ft and pops out of gear. I haven't driven it that's just his description of the problem. I'm a heavy equipment/truck mechanic and he asked for my help. Closest I've come to working on a synchro range is putting a clutch in a 4010D with synchro range trans. Anybody have any ideas to help with diagnoses of the problem/ tips for repairing it?
 
If it's not console it has synchronized reverse.
Figure on replacing ALL synchronizers, collars and top shaft shifters.
If console only has collar for reverse but figure on replacing the same as above.
 
I have one coming over doing that same thing that belongs to a buddy of mine, who wants me to look at it. Are all of those parts available new? And if so, to get them from JD, or aftermarket? Any idea for of a ballpark price on those parts? Thanks

you can get most of the parts through A&I,, i did one 2 weeks ago, i will look at the invoice tomorrow
 
Early & late model 3020's utilize the same top trans shaft.

Ooh yes and change the transmission pump.. it is like opening Pandora's box some times,,and that "While your in there" stuff soon adds up, but needs done..
