How much can you safely turn up a 4020?

There is a lot of talk about "turning up" or fueling up a 4020 pump to get more horsepower. How much can you get out of a 404 with out being abusive to the engine. Many thanks

4020's will live okay at 130hp, that is with a good radiator. anything more than that will be hard to keep cool and to hold the clutch, a better radiator can be installed and a 4320 clutch/flywheel assembly will fit to give you a bit more to handle the extra HP.the transmission and rear end is near the same as a 4320/4430. Like the old timers would say "Faster Horses need better Wagons"...

Tim,

I agree here. My 4020 with 466 does just fine, I run out of radiator before anything.

But how much can you get from a 404 without the turbo??

I wouldn't turn any tractor up more than 10% - 95X1.1= 105 hp for the 4020. If you need more HP, get a bigger tractor. As Tim already said, you'll need to start upgrading clutches and cooling systems and adding a turbo past that.

Frankly, a 4320 is a "super 4020" and can be bought for less money...

You are correct. I had my 4000 on two different dynos and it really puts out power. No use saying how much because some people won't believe it and tell me it's impossible.

I had a 4020 turnedd up with a turbo and streched the head bolts. Traded it to my brother for his 1950 oliver. Worst tractor ever, 2 bull gears and a broken axle. Thank goodness for fuel tanks to keep the wheel from going into the cab. I never thought that little 4-53 had that much power and you could tell when I was doing something.

Your 4020 probably had re-used head bolts that let them fail,,4430's use the same bolts, along with 4630's....

I saw with my own eyes 138 with no turbo and no problems , it did smoke when they went over that .

M&W made a new life kit for the 4020 that consisted of bigger 5 row rad, bigger oil pan,fan and shroud.Put a 7700 404 in mine the big issue is the cooling, need the bigger rad and fan.

We commonly turned early 4020s to 120. Never saw one above that. We changed pump leaf springs and would produce more smoke and less power set too high.
Actually lost power trying to go above 120.
Still produced excessive smoke throttling up and under load. But that's back when we liked to see that smoke.

And some 4020's just run better than others,, for different reasons, I see that in other tractors too,,pump timing, fuel delivery, engine condition, valve settings all these things will affect the performance...

I have seen a couple with good pistons that would do 120H.P. without turbo .Much better with turbo_One thing the 64/68 only held 8 guarts of oil and that was increases to 12 in 69.There are also some better fan options.I am 70 years old and somewhat of a hotrodder at heart but every time we increased the power we always wanted more. The factory usually overbuilds but there are limits and they can be expensive.

There is an sequence of adjustments listed in the Deere Tech manual,, but you can shoot from the hip and set your load adjustment lever in the middle and go in through the bung hole in the rear with a long extension and 9/16" socket, set your 3pt lever about 1 inch or so from all the way up and turn the adjusting screw with the socket clock wise till the hitch just starts to lift, then see how it acts for you...

I am not sure what all was done to dads 4020 but it had a completely new engine in 1980 and he had the pump and injectors done a few times once in the late 80's and then twice in the 90's due to bad fuel and every time he had it dynoed after injection work it would throw 120 out on the dyno easy. It smokes some when pulling hard but not excessive in my opinion. I should also add that it is a 1970 which still has the CBC Roosamaster pump and we couldn't be happier with that pump. Every body hates that pump but I love the quick governor response that the CBC has.
