720D main engine crankshaft alignment

I have been given a procedure that involves slowly and evenly bringing all three main bearing covers up to torque. While using a block of wood and sledge hammer, drive the crank left then right several times. I did this and it seem to work, when completed the crank would roll the counter weight down on its own. I have a few questions such as, has any body had to do this? Would you install the thrust washer(early serial #)while doing this? The center main plasta-gauged at 6 thousandths. I feel pretty confident about the end result so far. This is my first 2 cyl crank install and I would sleep better if a few of my fellow yters backed me up on this.
Thanks as always for the expert advice

I have done a few of them and don't remember having any issues ? Just bolt them in ? The thrust washers won't seat until the flywheel is in place. So I fail to see what good banging the crank right and left could do ?
If it turns free you should be fine. You can also check the bearing clearance of the outer ones with a dial indicator.
