JD B ignition problems

Last fall I was chopping corn and a plug wire got pulled off, killed the tractor and frying the points. This is a 46 B convered to a 12 volt system, negative ground with a Delco Remy distritutor. The coil that came with the distributor has a number 381 on it. upon frying the points, I changed points and condenser and an ABC509 coil from Steiner. Still no spark to plugs or out of the high tenson coil wire. With points open and switch on, I have voltage to the oil and back on both terminals. What do I need to do to fix this thing?

Assuming you have current to the Points and they are set properly...

Check the Condenser..even if it is New...

Not uncommon to get faulty Condensers..

Always buy Premium grade condensers..

I have a device I can check mine, saves many headaches..!!

Sometimes changing to a NEW set of plugs is worth a try..

Needless to say you can arc the hot wire to the coil to see if it's working. Then install point and condenser. I would removed wire from the points, turn ingnition on and see if arcing produces spark at coil.

I would touch 12volt test light to wire going to points and crank engine. If the light flashes completely on then off, points are good. If not clean the points. Don't forget points must be able to get all the way back to battery ground. So if you touch your test light to ground side of points and crank engine and you see any flicker of light from your test light you have a dist ground problem. good luck

Well, you "can" just charge a Capacitor from a hot wire and see if it will throw a spark..but it may still be breaking down when in Use...
