JD 730 Diesel transfer pump is leaking

Dad called said tractor is leaking diesel. Looked at it today it is leaking from transfer pump. He said it leaked one day he ran it and the next time it did not now it is leaking pretty good. I told him not to run it anymore. What am I looking at getting into?

It's possible to reseal the shaft, but a high
houred tractor will have a groove in the shaft
where the seal ran..
Your dealer could order you a new pump shaft
but I will warn you they are pricy. A whole
new pump might be avaiable ?? Who Know's but
if the shaft is in the 400.00 range.A new PUMP?
As for me I had ours shaft repaird. I thought
of having in spray welded & turned down, but
was unsure it would hold up? My tool maker
made sleeve , turned down the shaft & we
pressed a sleeve over top. This was about 6
months ago & seems to be doing fine so far..
But I bought a box of john Deere parts at a
auction for $9.50 & it just happend to have
transfer pump in the box.. So I still have a
used pump with a worn shaft if my repair doesn't
work....

If it is leaking into the crankcase then I would look at seal on pump. But if you have an external leak I would inspect for a loose or cracked line or fitting. Make sure it is not just running down from a leaky sediment bowl. Not as common but the pump housing could be leaking.

There are 2 seals on the pump drive shaft. Between the seals is a weep hole out the bottom of the pump housing. When the inner seal start to leak on the shaft it should leak out the weep hole if its not plugged up. The outer seal is to keep engine oil out of the pump from the governor. Typically the seals get hard over time and the drive shaft will wear where the seals ride. I make new gears for the pumps and have the seals if you need them.
