John Deere 50 that's been sitting for 5 years.

I've been asking some questions about a few John Deeres. As my experience is with Farmalls and we want to diversify a bit, I appreciate the help.
Up next is another 50. The tin is straight. It's been sitting for 5 years. Rubber looks good. He says it started and ran when parked.
Question: what should I look out for on a John Deere 50 that's been sitting for that long? Should I take the side cover to check if the motor is free or can I hand crank it? He's asking $1200. Is that fair if it won't start? Thanks a lot.

Does it have live PTO, POWER STEERING 2 PIECE front pedestal and so on. More than likely stuck, if not buy it no Questions asked.Whats the SERIAL #? Is it holding ANTI-FREEZE?

Would be nice know if the engine would turn?

Sitting inside for 5 years is a whole lot
different that sitting outside? Was/is it
drained? 1200.00 doesn't sound terrible if
inside storeage.

The engine can be turned by going to the pulley on the right and engaging clutch and shift to neutral and turn the pulley. Before starting always do an engine oil change.

That price would be ok for one RUNNING AND all Gears verified to be OK..

Otherwise, it is a "Pig-in-a-Poke"...

If the engine is Stuck, do not try to force it..fill the cylinders with a mix of ATF and Kerosene and let set..

Just like with any tractor check fluids and check that it is not locked up then go from there. Me when I look at things like that I take a battery with me and a few tools. Maybe as simple as cleaning the points and if it has old gas in it draining some and adding some fresh gas

If it's not stuck you should be able to get it running pretty easy. I never had one that turned over I could not get to run. I also had several that were stuck I freed up and got running too.

Make sure the valves aren't stuck before you get to wild turning the engine over . I tried pull starting a DC Case with a few stuck valves and ended up with bent push rods. I got a stuck JD A going for my last project and one of the rocker arms was bent. The acetone ATF mix worked to unstick the engine. Two cylinders are a different animal than the four cylinders. We really enjoyed getting our '45 A running. I say get it. You'll be glad you did.
