PTO Keeps Blowing A Fuse

My friend has a 1999 John Deere 6605 that KEEPS ON giving PTO trouble. It is now blowing a 10 amp fuse that we KNOW is directly involved in keeping the PTO running. We have looked at & replaced 2 solenoid "coils" at the rear of the tractor, yet it keeps popping fuses. We thought we had it fixed, but after pulling a bushhog about 100 yards it blew another one. As you know, the wiring system on this tractor is quite complicated & almost impossible to chase individual wires. If ANYONE definitely KNOWS what is causing this we sure would like to hear from you. Also, if ANYONE knows where we cab get a wiring diagram for this tractor without paying $150.00 for a book!! we SURE would like to hear from you. The weather is now BAD... it's HARD to work out there.... and we NEED TO KNOW what will fix this thing. We are pretty desperate now... so just accept our THANKS - in advance - for ANY help that you can give..... FredT

Is there wiring coming up from the floorboards to the seat safety switch that may have gotten mangled?

Bob - FIRST let me thank you for your reply. As you've PROBABLY guessed, we are at "wits end" with this thing. No, I haven't checked on that particular wire just yet, but I WILL. As a matter of fact I was gonna post something else here today - and you just might be able & willing to help with this. My friend has a "tractor manual", but it is nowhere near complete - there is not a sign of a wiring diagram. I feel that a wiring diagram would be VERY helpful, but he is in no shape to go out to Ebay and drop $150 on yet another manual... one that might not help any at all. I was gonna come out here today and make an offer to PAY SOMEONE - ANYONE - for xeroxed copies of the wiring diagrams FOR THIS TRACTOR. I figure that $20 or $25 MIGHT be a fair price for the effort... but then again, I don't know if anyone would be that interested in helping. Bob, these are beginning to look like desperate times for my friend. It seems that everytime he turns around something else is breaking on this tractor. I also have a John Deere, a 5410, but I have had almost ZERO problems with it - he bought this one used & I'm afraid he got a lemon.... and now after having it several years he is not financially able to trade it off. As I said, ANYTHING that ANYONE might do would REALLY be welcome here.... especially wiring diagrams. And FINALLY (& aren't you GLAD this IS finally)I would appreciate it if you would use my "regular" email address to contact me. This web site is new to me & it seems a little strange AND I'm not sure I'm getting around on it right. THANKS AGAIN...... FredT... fredted at charter dot net... THANKS AGAIN, Bob...

The wiring diagram will be in the Deere tech manual. Most Dealers will run you off a copy free.

Fuses blow due to a short or overload. You changed the solenoid so it's most likely a wire with the insulation worn through touching metal somewhere.

While it is getting harder and harder to get a dealer to help without bringing it into their shop I would suspect that someone in the Deere network may of had this problem before or there could even be a service bulletin on it.
Try a local dealer to see if they would be willing to search for a bulletin on it.

M-MAN - thank you TOO for your input. I called my nearest JD dealer this AM & talked with a parts man there (I worked with this gentleman years ago at another place) & told him what was going on. He (Will) is ALWAYS helpful, so I asked him if he would xerox a few pages of wiring diagrams for me. I told him NOT to do this if it would jeopardize his job, but he said he would be HAPPY to, but that I could do that myself if I went out to "www.jdparts.deere.com".... Well, I went out there but could NOT find what I think I need (my "computer skills" are not the best). He AGREED that I probably DO NEED a wiring diagram to track down the problem, and he also said that IF I needed him to he would copy the right pages & send them to me. He was sorta in a hurry to get out of there & go home since the weather here is very bad today, supposed to get WORSE this evening, and there was a real chance that he might get trapped at work if he didn't leave soon. So the bottom line is that I finally DO have a place to go get wiring diagrams (in the comfort of my own home).... but that I can't seem to locate them on that site, AND that I really do need someone to tell me - step by step - how to get the diagrams (remember I said my computer skills are not the greatest? - in fact, I think I must be an idiot).... So I'll keep pounding away at this thing - and if I can't figure out that web site I'll call Will again & ask him to copy the pages & send them to me. But I DO THANK YOU for your interest.... BTW, YOU don't happen to know HOW to get wiring diagrams from this particular site, do you?? Thanks again..... FredT

We can view the parts books there but not the tech manuals. The parts book will have pics of the wiring and switches but not the actual wiring diagrams. That was moved to the tech manual only when two cylinders were phased out. Dealers have access to places there we don't.

Yeah, I was afraid of that.... But what about those "manuals" that you find on Ebay? - you know, the ones that SAY there are wiring diagrams included?? Are they being less than honest?? (and AGAIN, THANKS for your input!)
