setting valves on a 37 A

I am going to do this from memory.....so bear with me please.
Bring left (flywheel side) cyl up on compression stroke till the timing marks align (LH impulse) at 3:00 on flywheel. Set both valves on left cyl, They call for .020 hot, so I usually go for .022, or .023 cold. Better a little loose than too tight. After left cyl is set, turn flywheel 180 degrees CCW and set the right side cyl.
I hope this helps you. ...Dale

If one refers to the original owners manual the method JD used was very simple. Each flat of the cupped lash adjuster equals 10 thousands so two flats equal twenty. Turn adjuster out till zero free play then back off two flats. This gives a very accurate setting as it accounts for the fact that rocker tips wear. Unless you've had your rockers resurfaced where they contact the valve or bought new this is the best method.
