60 fan shaft shims

The front support for the fan shaft on my 60 has been broken and rewelded by the previous owner. I cleaned it up and it looks good now but Im wondering about the height. In the manual it says not to disturb the washers (used as shims I assume) that are under it. There weren't any under this one and I don't know if there ever was. How could I see what to do?

ASSUMING that the fanshaft/tube is "as original", and hasn't been whacked about/abused/mangled you simply want to select a shim/washer thickness at the front that steadies the tube in place, but does not deflect it upwards or downwards.

Try lifting it up unbolted by twice what you think that end might weigh. If you now have clearance, you would want only half that thickness as shims in there as a maximum amount of shims/washers. Since it's been welded and we don't know for sure where or how good a job was done it's really a judgement call on your part. Looking for the place where the shaft wants to be at minus it's own weight which is all the static load that front support should have on it. Just kicking out ideas here. If it helps, this is probably just how the shims were selected in the first assembly at the factory.
