JD Lemon Model after 2010

I lot seem to be written here about JD 2010 being a lemon in Diesel model. What other models would you list as "stay away from" on the used market.

2840's as they were as bad as 2010's maybe worse. The poorest hyd of any Deere built.

Not a lemon but be very careful and bring in an expert if necessary would be the 3010 diesel. Closer to a lemon might be the 2840 although I know of a local farmer that got along with his rather well.

They are not done producing lemons as some of the brand new ones also have problems.

2010 diesel engine was not a "lemon." If maintained and used correctly, it could last a long time. Now - as far the rest of the tractor if a wheel tractor - yeah, pretty bad as compared to other Deere tractors.

1010 and 2010s had a lot of "firsts" for John Deere. First diesels to use rotary-distributor fuel injection pumps. First cylinder heads to use positive-type valve-stem seals. First full-sized engines to use wet-sleeves and only series to use sleeve-decks. 1010 crawlers were the first to use forward-reverse reversers with hydraulic-powered clutches. 2010 crawlers were the first to have hydraulic clutched reversers with two speeds forward.

That's easy to answer with Deere just the same as any other make. steer clear of anything with high hours thats had poor maintenance.

It seems on this forum if a guy or 20 guys says a models junk there are always a few that had a good one L.O.L.
It also seems we have our fair share of guys buying used Deeres at premium prices, and then coming here to find out why the hydraulics don't work right when they have had it a while to! No maintenence or it's plain worn out seems to be the common thing.

Well even back in the mid 1970's when 1010 and 2010 models were not antiques I was still told by many who worked for Deere to not buy one !
I still gave into temptation in the early 1990's ? and took one in on trade on a 720D. It was a 1010 RUS and was a low houred original. Was able to resell it and it made the new owner a decent utility tractor.
They were not up to other JD tractors of the day but I do believe they were better then some of the competitors.
Parts supply mainly lack there of is a big problem with them.
If you want a tractor to use you better be good at scrounging up parts. I sure would not want it to be my only tractor !

Back when I was employed at a JD dealer there was a saying about a 2010

"A person couldn't break a good 2010 and couldn't repair a bad 2010''.

I think the 2010 diesel cyl head with pre-combustion chambers gave more trouble than other style diesel cyl heads. And to make matters worse there was the sorry Presolite starters.

The '63 4020-D Dad bought in Dec. '68 was a huge money pit too compared to every 4020 I've ever been around.

My brother had a 2020 utility he used as a chore tractor that had its problems too.

There was a local dealer around here who got so sick of warranty issues on 7800s, that he would only sell 8100s with the 540 pto option at the end.

Why, Deere introduced them in the fall of '63. What did I miss?

There are random "lemon" tractors in every model and every color, even in the most popular models. There's always someone with a bad story. 2840 is the one to stay away from after the 2010. There may be good ones out there along with the bad, but after working on green tractors for years I can see the odds are not in your favor.

I think what Jim is referring to is that , even though there were 4020's manf. in fall 63", they are labeled as 64" 4020"s ; With first serial # 65,000 being a 1964 model... ... The Deere dealer I was with sold my family a 3010D in Nov. 1960, We finished moleboard plowing with it that month, When bought we had agreed to bring it back to town in Feb. so it could be displayed at John Deere Day... It was than an still is a 1961 model...

The only John Deere I've ever been consistently annoyed with was a 2020 gas could never get the carburetor right. Had a 2020 diesel at the same time w/hyd.reverser that was tougher than a bag of hammers.

you wouldn't believe how many are reworked at outside shops before they leave waterloo.
