I decided to use a dial indicator while setting the valve lash and adjusting the compression release. I have a point on the end of my dial gauge and read off of the adjusting screw. After getting inconsistent results when rechecking my adjustment, I set valve lash with a feeler gauge. I think for the compression release i should have read off the top of the valve spring retainer. I feel comfortable with a feeler gauge on the valve lash adjustment. What would be the best place to position a dial indicator to measure valve lash? Book says .0020 hot,I set valve lash at .0025 cold

A dial indicator only reads a fixed high point. A valve train by nature has variations and the more parts are worn the worse it is. A round wire type feeler gauge is much more accurate on valves.

Valves were adjusted to 25 thousandths, only my typing is at 2 and a half. Any advice on dial indicator use or placement when adjusting compression release or valve lash?
