Removing Lock Nut from Model B Countershaft

Hello everyone.I'm trying to remove the countershaft on a 46 B. After bending back the tab on the lock washer to disengage the lock washer from the notches in the lock nut, the service manual simply says to "remove lock nut and take off lock washer and plain washer." Question is, how do you remove the lock nut? Is there a special wrench needed to mate up with the notches in the lock nut? In figure 135-15-14 it looks as if the lock nut just slides off, but the one I'm working on is firmly fixed in place so far.

Rusty Wheel,
Thanks. I saw in the archives a comment about how you could use a punch and hammer, but that it might bang up the notches. I gave that a try last night and I succeeded in the part about banging up one of the notches, but the nut hasn't budged. Thought I would stop and ask before proceeding further. I haven't tried heating it up yet.

The lock nut looks like the nut used on old Dana 4x4 front axles. You might try to find/borrow the special socket that's used on them and see if it fits.

The nut is called a spanner nut. They are fine threaded and it should have a number on it. Number 3 o 4 or 5 etc. Before U start distorting the nut, go to a tool supply and get a spanner wrench to fit the nut. Number 4 spanner nut takes a number 4 wrench. Be careful with the nut cause the threads are easy to mess up. Good luck.
