Hey everyone-I am restoring my grand-dads JD M and I'm working on the steering tube and shaft but can't for the life of me figure out why the adjustable shaft in the steering tube won't come out. Could it be rusted in the steering tube or is there a secret pin I'm missing? Please help guys!

Those things had a very bad habit of coming out on their own, just at the most inopportune moment, like when you're using the steering wheel as a hand hold to help pull yourself up onto the tractor! So a lot of them got "fixed" permanently. Under the hood, look for a plug weld, cross pin, set screw or something like that.

Yes there's a pin you can't see. Remove the hood and look for a hole near the dash. You have to pull the shaft out until the pin is centered in the hole and drive it out.

If it's rusted solid you'll need a good penetrating oil and lots of gentle taps if you're lucky. If not it will take heat and possibly a driving rod from the other end.

Awesome, you guys are right! I did find a small weld. I never even thought about how inconvenient it would be if I grabbed the steering wheel to get on and it come out. Thanks again guys.
