4620 cold start project

just wanted to thank the folks on here for ongoing advice on my JD4620. I have now fitted three thermostart plugs to the intake manifold.. only two of them are wired / plumbed but the old girl is firing up (at -3 celcius) after a few seconds of cranking with 20 - 25 sec of heat... prior to this it was either plug her in (block heater) for 2 - 3 hours or else a shot of ether

Our 4620 is also a hard starter so it sets in the corner of the shed waiting for spring. Ours could use an overhaul but it is putting out 170 hp. and we put less than 200 hours a year on it mostly chopping hay, corn and snaplage. Tough tractors. Tom

I wonder what part # thermostarts you used? Delphi makes them in three fuel flows, low, medium and high depending on engine size. Never seen where three was needed, I'll bet it works well. Just one high flow would have worked at the manifold inlet, that's what's on MF Sisu Valmet engines too. Thermostarts are designed for both turbo and non turbo engines also.

Hi diesel tech, the plugs used were the standard ones fitted to valtra/mf & Perkins etc. You are correct that other tractors have one plug but those manifolds are way different to the 4620, there is no place to fit a plug on main intake and had to be careful to keep away from the aftercooler contained within the manifold :)
