3020 john deere power shift problems

I have a 1964 john deere power shift that will not come out of gear in park. I can put the tractor in park and let go of the inching pedal and the tractor will move forward. the tractor will move in all gears forward and reverse when in reverse the engine will lug down and want to die. I had to split the tractor because the rear main seal was leaking so i pulled the first clutch pack out and all of the clutch disks were free c1, c2, and PTO. I had john deere tear it apart to make sure nothing was wrong internally but it was fine. Every time i sift to 3rd forward gear the tractor stops then goes. So i took the control valve off and cleaned the four shifting valve they moved freely up and down and did not have any free play in the bore. The shifting linkages have no play either. The park pawl must not be working the only way to stop the tractor is to use the inching pedal and brake or shut it off. Not sure what else to check any suggestions. thanks

Park pawl cable moves back and fourth fine. Doesn't the park pawl keep the tractor from rolling when the tractor is off or in park. I think the problem is that a clutch pack still is getting oil when in park thus making the tractor move in park. when the tractor is in park the gear selector valve it out all the way.

Not sure I understand your problems.
Roller could be off pawl or pawl broken.
This will keep if from going into park
not shifting problems.

Yes it is slightly confusing when you say [i:c5d397e02f]'will not come out of gear in park'[/i:c5d397e02f] Maybe you can explain that a little better for us. But the park pawl stops the tractor from rolling when in park. The tractor should not pull when the lever is in neutral or park. Hard to know if yours is pulling or just rolling. If park is not engaging when the lever is in park then the cable is not adjusted right or you have another problem like a broken arm or cable (or worse, a problem on the inside). The early powershifts like yours had a direct connection to the park shaft, whereas later powershifts had a coil spring that connected the park shaft and cable. This was an improvement, but the springs are notorious for breaking. It is possible to upgrade to the new style. The main thing to check is to see if the arm is moving and not just the cable. Then you can try to adjust from there. I believe there is an adjuster for that on the shifter linkage in the dash.

The other part does sound like the linkages could be out of adjustment. I'm sure Tim will be along soon to advise on other possibilities.

The park pawl should engage tight enough to kill the engine if the clutch pack(s) don't release.

IMHO the only correct way to diagnose powershift trans problems is by using gauges and recording the pressures in every gear. You could remove floorboard & trans cover and inspect park pawl.

Make sure the shaft is turning with the park arm that the cable is connected to. I have seen the roll pin break or come out of the arm and not engage the park pawl inside. Can you stop the tractor with the brakes or does it try to kill the engine when applying brakes? Without park working, most tractors will creep some due to oil drag in the clutch packs.

I checked the cable it moves and so does the arm on the park pawl. The engine does not die when i use the brake. When i shift to park sometimes the park pawl works because when i let the inching pedal out the tractor does not move but the engine lugs down or will die if i don't push the inching pedal back down. sometimes i can shift to park and let the inching pedal out and the tractor will take off in a speed like 3rd gear on flat ground.

Sounds as if the shift valve or linkage isn't functioning properly

I owned a power shift for years and I was told time and time again only use the inching pedal at start up stay off of it after that no matter what or you will have problems

All the inching pedal does is open/close a hyd valve on a JD tractor with a Powershift trans. Nothing more & nothing less so although I don't recommend using the foot pedal a lot I see nothing much to tear up/wear out.
