I have a 4020 diesel block that is cracked between all cylinders. Its on a parts tractor so I'm not gonna fix it. Is there any use to keep the block or just chunk it in my scrap metal pile?

Well normally I'd just pitch it too. BUT now with the EPA involved in engine cores , core charges and having to have some engines destroyed or picture proof of being destroyed I might hang onto it. That would make a perfect one to turn in for a destroyed core all the while keeping a good rebuildable core alive so it can be rebuilt.
Our company was getting hit with a $ 1,500 core charge even on brand NEW engines because of this.
Not sure how that model engine falls into the law right now though.

I have never heard of such a thing??? I guess the EPA is busy trying to ruin all facets of normal life...When will it all end?? And when will we stand up against them??

This EPA stuff is a nightmare !

I hope you can avoid it in your business !

Building new machines and repowering old ones is really getting complicated from all of this.

Our African President doubled the EPA budget when he came into office,,makes you wonder who's side they are really on...they go "Un-checked" any one who raises their voice against them are soon put out of business...We no longer live in a free country, ran by the vote of the people..

Wow. As much as it is important to keep accurate technical and tractor information here, and to actively avoid opinions related to religion and politics, it is difficult to not call out these sorts of statements and distribution of misinformation.

The Nixon United States Environmental Protection Agency initiative was enacted in 1970 by executive order.

Reviewing the 2001 to 2013 EPA enacted budgets (one citation is http://www.sunaware.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/EPABudgetoverview1.png and another http://afgelocal704.org/issues/u-s-epa-budget-staffing-levels/ and another interesting opinion at http://www.govexec.com/management/2014/12/epas-budget-cut-shrinks-staff-smallest-1989/101847/), it is abundantly clear that no one has "doubled the EPA budget". Absolutely there was a 30% increase in 2010 and perhaps 20% of that came back down in 2011. We can also understand that 2012 was the same as it was in 2004 (during the GW Bush administration).

While I can not speak to the accuracy of the numbers, http://www.proposalexponent.com/federalprofiles.html is also an interesting way to look at data.

In terms of how the budgeting process, as a whole, works, the article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_budget_process describes it reasonably well I believe.

Yeah and the state and federal agencies are not making it any easier to farm either. New Jersey DEP is a nightmare. Of course they could care less about farmers as we're outnumbered 5000 to 1. The state Farm Bureau is humming just to keep us all out of trouble.

I am not telling you to keep it but we have a 4020 that was overhauled 20 years ago that was cracked top and bottom between all six holes and is still running fine. Lots of hard hours doing tillage and forage harvester. We used a Locktite sealer from our CaseIH dealer either a 505 or 515 and put plenty top and bottom. The person who recommended it said if it help 2 days it would be good for 20 years.Back then I had no money so it was worth a try. Today I would more than likely buy a good block.I also fixed two 3020's the same way. Tom

(quoted from post at 11:09:43 01/29/15) I was wondering when it started...sure has "Snow Balled" since then...

Not entirely certain which "it" you refer to. But if it is the EPA...

Citing several sources...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Environmental_Policy_Act : The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) is a United States environmental law that established a U.S. national policy promoting the enhancement of the environment. Additionally, it established the President's Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ). The law was enacted on January 1,1970. . . NEPA grew out of increased appreciation for the environment and concerns for ecological well being. The public outcry after the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill was a leading catalyst for the law’s creation.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Environmental_Protection_Agency : Beginning in the late 1950s and through the 1960s, Congress reacted to increasing public concern about the impact that human activity could have on the environment. . . The agency conducts environmental assessment, research, and education. It has the responsibility of maintaining and enforcing national standards under a variety of environmental laws, in consultation with state, tribal, and local governments. It delegates some permitting, monitoring, and enforcement responsibility to U.S. states and the federally recognized tribes. EPA enforcement powers include fines, sanctions, and other measures. The agency also works with industries and all levels of government in a wide variety of voluntary pollution prevention programs and energy conservation efforts.

I believe also that there was something of an interaction/association with the EPA and the phase out of TEL (because of its cumulative neurotoxicity, the introduction of catalytic converters, and, as a side note evidently also the main cause of spark plug fouling) in motor fuel. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetraethyllead has more information.

So,, I'm setting here with my Hill-Billy mind,,wondering how a junk engine block is a menace to our society??? More things that I don't understand...

I have information about some this from Superior Diesel on a paper dated 2008 on JD new engines and repowers.
I googled epa engine cores, Holy moley what a bunch of gobley gook ! My eyes glaze over in just a few sentences.

"junk engine block is a menace to our society"? In what way do you see a junk engine as a problem? It is not yet clear what you are trying to share with us.

I have to confess to being concerned with the distribution of misinformation and the potential abuse of the "No political comments, hate speech or bigotry of any kind." rule.

You guys really crack me up. What a crock.

Somebody mentions EPA or external_link and you guys go off with stories like a bunch of old ladies.

Kind of sorry I brought up the EPA now after all this ruckus. But this is a real issue with EPA and engine cores. Makes a real nightmare for manufactures ! and even those swapping out engines.
Many people still don't know it is going on. I know very little about it. Just enough to know I want no part of it. But it's here and it's real and likely only to get worse ! This stuff never goes away only grows in to a bigger mess.

Don't be sorry about it Mike,, Most people just keep their head buried in the sand and let the EPA walk all over them,,this issue is just a small example, when you look around and actually see how it's affecting us all it's an un-tamed animal. I was looking at a new 8370R last week the exhaust pipe/muffler looks like a silo on the corner of the cab,, as I was wondering what and why I found that it's part of the Tier 4 emission equipment,, I priced the muffler and top pipe, 1-RE558426 muffler $8,693, 1 RE566151 top pipe $516...$9,209 and that was not near all that went into the Tier 4 added cost....the cost of the EPA to our country is a staggering figure,,and then calculate all the job loses to that.....

The sky is not falling regardless of the political comments on here.
Load that old block along with the rest of your scrap pile and cash it in.
Be sure to remove rods, etc that are more valuable as parts.

Hi Tracy, On a lighter note, Uncle Gene bought a 70LP block and pistons from you a couple years back that you shipped to Colorado Springs. We left the rods in place, changed out the pistons, and stuffed the block on, etc. The operation was a success and the 70 runs great. Thanks for the great parts. Anyone out there need a cracked 70LP core block? Best regards, VH

I have personally been exposed to huge amounts of dioxin back in the 1960's, flagging for aircraft that were apply 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T to our cotton fields. My best friend in High School, who often got the same dosages that I did, died in 1999 from the effects of dioxin. I frequently wonder when my time will come. I know that my friend suffered horribly from it before he died. The EPA was created to help keep these things from happening, and it has done its job commendably. Nuff said. Hugh

Your telling me you have the ability to look up all the budget info on the EPA and the terms of use for the site and can't understand what Tim S is saying?
Tim my Grandpa said "don't argue with a fool onlookers can't tell who is who" and I think that statement fits this situation perfectly.

Frankly no I can not figure out what he was trying to say. There was slander and misinformation, but what I really got out of it was that he didn't care for the EPA. Why or what exactly that had to do with an engine block I don't know. Evidently, Tim S also had never heard of such a thing but the details of exactly what the "thing" are has not been clarified.
