4030 update

Finally got to work on my 4030.Noise in rear. You guys were right it was rear axle bearing.Bolt backed off giving too mutch play.Luckly I stopped and floated it home before too mutch damage.Going to go over brakes while in there.Any other advice welcomed.Lloyd

Make sure which axle you have before ordering parts, they offered a 2 7/8" and a 3 1/8"and the space/bushing #3 getting hammered up from back and forth action is the main reason the bearing comes loose be sure to change it too.

Also check for axle wear at outer bearing.
I always loctite the bolt to keep it from loosening.

A couple years back I had the axle housings off my 2520 as one was leaking. They had never been off. When I got in there the reason was obvious- the oil seal was cocked! It worked out well as the brakes were a tiny bit loose. Dealer sold me new capscrews, and I think recommended loctiting them as well. I could see nothing wrong with any of that part. I suppose on the big tractors they took a lot of grief.

The torque on the bolt gets released when the spacer out on the end of the axle starts to hammer into the rib on the axle giving end play that keeps growing as it hammers back and forth, then the bolt slips through the lock plate and all goes from bad to worse...

Many years ago I put 38 inch castings and rubber on a JD 4000 that had been originally on 34 inch. When the axles were bare I grabbed the ends to check them and the left axle was pretty loose. Anyway they have a kit now to preload the bearings. You put some lead balls between axle and carrier and tighten down to a foot pound value I have forgotten. Then you take it apart and measure the width of the lead balls after they have been squeezed down. Then you shim to either that width or so many thousandths less. This effectively locks axle to the carrier and they stay snug because there are less places for flex to develop. Newer tractors starting I do not know where were set up this way at the factory. Kit had good instructions. A year or two later did same to a 4430 we then owned. Still own the 4000.

On looking at Tim's schematics I think you would put the lead balls between the end of the axle and part number 23. Anyway the instructions in the kit are good.

Also if your axle has run loose the outer bearing at the end of the axle carrier may have spun on the axle. There are specs for turning down on lathe if needed and using a bearing with smaller bore.
