JD 420W Transmission

I recently purchased a 420. I started it and had the transmission in neutral and engaged the clutch. After a few seconds I noticed the tractor wanting to jerk forward as if to try to put itself in gear. There is some "noise" in transmission area. Could I have bearing issues and if so, can the transmission be overhauled without slitting the tractor? I also noticed that the gears to the rear of the shift pattern seem to engage when barely slipped into position.
Thanks in advance.

If you have no prior experience with a Dubuque tractor, I suggest you find one and go through the gear shift options to feel what an OK tranny feels like. Wear on the shifter knobs (at the bottom) is common, and changes how they shift,

Pull the tranny cover and look - worn gears, broken teeth, worn shifters, bent forks, etc. Put a magnet into the bottom of the case and see if you pull up anything.

I'm guessing you also have clutch repair in your future.

For sure, splitting will be necessary - probably at BOTH the clutch and tranny.

You need to search this forum - lots of pics and discussion.

To fix the transmisson bearings or any gears you have to completely disassemble the rear of the tractor after you split it. Alot more to fixing it than an model"A" or "B" Good Luck

Which 420 and which of various different transmissions?
The parts book is online at the JD web site.
Odds are splitting stands, feeler gauges, a parts washer, micrometer, calipers and a torque wrench are in your tractor's future. Each and Every little bitty drive train part has to be split and disassembled.
