4020 powershift plugging filters

I took my 4020 in to get a oil leak fixed and
the pto would not shut off about 400 hours ago.
It is now leaking running down the left side in
front of the filters. He put a used clutch pack
in and said that was the problem. When I picked
it up the pto still would not shut off. That
ended up a dowel pin in pto break (he had to split
it again). It has plugged the filters about
every 8 to 12 hours since then. It shifts fine
but last fall when it was 20 degrees it would kill
the motor if you put it in park for a few days and
that cleared up. I have changed the oil in the
rear end twice since then trying to clean the
system up but it doesn't help. The oil looks
silvery and I use john deere oil. I had no issues
with filters plugging until I had it worked on.
Could it be a bad clutch pack he installed?

The silver in the hyd oil is usually indicative of worn out brakes.(steel on steel)or possibly clutch pack failure. Don't run the tractor any more until it is repaired, or you will pump the contaminants into every valve, line, nook and cranny of the whole tractor. After it is repaired, Deere sells "clean up filters" to remove the contaminants washed out by the hydraulic oil. It will probably take several sets to clean out the system.Once it quits clogging filters, you can change the hyd oil and go back to regular filters.

I agree check your brakes,,they will still work smooth metal to metal..and the more you run it the worse it will get...

I concur with the others, it's probably the brakes. I have a 4020 and that was one of the reasons I bought it. The previous owner spent thousands completely rebuilding the power shift and the real problem was the brakes. I feel confident that I could rebuild the motor but would have to hire the power shift rebuild.
