Gas or diesel 730 for haying

I hope to be getting a wide front 730 in the future to rake and ted hay from time to time. I had planned on getting a diesel, but I was on haytalk and a couple seemed to think I should get a gas because of the 730 diesel reliability. What's ever ones opions on here? Thanks in advance!!

A GOOD 730 diesel will be very reliable... but
they can be pricey to fix, and many out there have
been worked very hard for a long time.

A 730 gas would be a lot simpler, easier to start,
quieter to listen to- and burn a lot more fuel.

If I were raking hay, I think I'd choose the gas
one.

I use a NF 730 diesel to rake and tedder hay mostly just to use a two cylinder but it does good and easy on fuel.

For raking hay, about all you need is a "B", "A", 50 or 520..
I love my 720D but it only gets used on the larger jobs here..and I use the 630 in the winter.

This is how we rake. 730 diesel. Great fun!

That's a good looking raking set up, I rake with a krone 46t
rotary rake. I want something with power steering, and it's
gotta have a hydraulic remote for my rake and tedder. I need a
wide front incase I decide to bale with it because I have a
inline Massey square baler. Plus I have always dreamed of
owning a nice 730. I think I'm gonna get a diesel electric star
for fuel efficiency. If I have problems out of it rebuild it then I
will know I've got a good tractor. I plan on keeping it a long
time.

I would add that sometimes the standard does not give me enough crop clearance,a wide front row crop might be better.

I have 2 720's that we use for haying. One is a gas and the other is an LP. I like the LP better. Side by side for the last 2 years with diesel at 3.50 a gallon and LP at about 1.60 a gallon, they have been about the same cost per hour to run. The plus on the LP is easier starting, but the negative is having to head home every time you fill it. You can't transport fuel to it. We put up hay up to 10 miles away from home, and having to run home every day to fuel up is kind of a pain some days... I think the 720 LP will be getting sold this spring just for that reason.

The 720/730D are a real pleasure to operate...they are pretty noisy at idle..quiet under load (comparatively speaking)..
Love the fact that you have NO idea how hard they are working until you finally see some smoke..!!
Real misers when it comes to fuel use..

If you have a GOOD Pony-Start (AND Take CARE of it), you will be better off, compared to buying new batteries every year..
I MUCH prefer the 720 because of the straight steering shaft with no universals to wear..

A 730 gas is a lot harder to find than a diesel & will have carb
& ignition issues at some point. Drink fuel like a BOSS. The
only issue with the diesels is loose flywheels. And the gas
ones weren't much better there- they had the same issue.
Narrow front will turn much shorter but depends what you pull.

For whatever it's worth, you can do what I did for my 70 LP: I rigged up a five gallon tank with flexible line to get me home when the need arises. Doesn't solve the problem, but does make it easier to deal with. Hugh

I agree as I also use a john Deere 50 or the 520 to rake hay or other light jobs. My 720 is a gas which does burn more fuel so it stays in the shed unless I need something bigger.

Pulled a one-row seedling planter with out '52 "B" 2 days ( 14 hours of running at idle or near that), at the end it took 7 Gal of gas to fill it.. and that one is bored +.180" ( bored in 1960).

Funny how the 720 can feel just as nimble..if the temps are warm and the gearbox is not too stiff..!!
