jd 4440 left diff bearing tim s

Working on my 4440, at a buddies shop.
I know i saw in a thread some where, you said any time you have the left side axle housing off to check the left side diff bearing.
My buddy has worked at jd for many years, he has never had to replace that bearing, he has never even heard of the bearing going bad.
Can you just undo the bolts and pull the bearing out? My buddy thinks the diff oil line is on that side and the bearing wont pull out. But isnt sure.
I have no idea, this is the first time i had the axles off.
He is also worried that if the bearing does need to be replaced, he doesnt like the idea of a new bearing on one side and the old used bearing on the other side. Have you had any problems with this?
Please clear this up for us, please and thank you!

By all means look at it, last year I had to replace 2 different ring and pinions because the bearing failed and let the ring gear jump up and down on the pinion, it's the left one that fails and at serial # 52,661 and up they changed to a bigger bearing, the oil line is on the right side quill, so you can slip the left side off and look at it, it will be possible to change it there but a chore, I would not worry too much about a new one on one side and not the other,,but if the left one is going bad you need to know about it..

Back when I worked for the dealer , when I was close to that bearing I changed them out . Almost everyone was spalling . The nip. bearings were the worst. I thought they were soft .

Yes Don, we would and still do when I'm in there, that's why I wanted this guy to check it while he was in there .
