Looking to update my current 455 diesel mower ( mow 4 acres ) to a larger 855, 955 or 4300 or that series. Looking for fwa with loader for snow removal as well. Anyone have any advice or experience on these JD machines.

I have a '96 855, MFWD, that I've had for about 14 years. It's been almost trouble free. The hydro tranny makes a great little loader/mower tractor. You're right in wanting MFWD if you're planning on a loader. Personally, I'd be a little cautious of the 42, 43, 4400 because of their Funk tranaxle. The 4100 or those bigger than the 4400 have Yanmar/Kanzaki/TuffTorq transaxles. I think the 42, 43, 4410's stayed with the Funk, but as the last two numbers hit 20 or maybe 25, they too switched to Yanmar/Kanzaki/TuffTorq transaxles. Drive one with the the Funk transaxle for yourself. Inquire about performance and reliability.

One of my daughters has a JD-955 FWA, loader, tiller and belly mower and has used the dickens out of it for the last 10 years. She had a hydraulic line rub in two underneath a couple of years ago due to factory routing, but other than that, has been trouble free for her. It is unbelievably easy to start in cold weather, too.

I had a smaller 755 and a 4100. Liked them both but I think the 755 had more power and the hydro was a lot faster.
If you find one of these older models make sure it already has a loader on it as for my 755 they did not sell them to fit anymore. The brackets get discontinued pretty quickly.

Interesting - that steel hydraulic line under the tractor having a hole rubbed in it is the most serious problem I've had with my 855. I fixed it myself, though it took a while.

If you are looking at a 4300 make sure its the later serial number with the 2 hydraulic cyl. steering. The early models used a single double end cylinder and redesigned it mid range in the serial series for a VERY good reason!
