late 4020 gas engine overhaul kit

We have a late 4020 gas tractor at work.
We are wanting to overhaul it for a
customer. Deere doesn't offer an overhaul
kit for it. You can get everything
individually. The problem is the cost is
roughly $500. a hole (cylinder). So far we
haven't been able to find an aftermarket
alternative. The early 4020's were
different so the kits do not enterchange.
I am just curious if someone has ran into
this before. Thanks.

Ditto what Earl stated about parts available on YT.

Would I be correct in guessing you are working on a 362 and not a 340 which you can get kits everywhere for?

I couldn't come up with any other sources. I do know the 340 and 362 use the same connecting rod, one has a 4 in stroke and the other a 4.25. If it were mine I would look into modifying a set of 340 Pistons, you would only have to drop the height by .125. You would also need to figure out how much to take out of the bowl and if there will be enough thickness left in the bottom. It would be an opertunity to adjust the compression ratio to what ever the customer wanted if that is something they would be interested in.

I was just looking for pictures of heads and they appear to have a chamber in them, as for Pistons, no luck finding a picture. They might be flat tops.

The only place you will find the sleeve assemblies is from Deere. I went through this on my 4000 two years ago. No one and I mean no one else sells them. They might list them but they don't have them.

The engine is a 362cu. The engine serial number is M21R0 239855R. The tractor serial number is T211R 219639R. The block part number is R40670. The part number on a piston that came out of it is R47863.

OK now we know it's a true late model 4020. I'd suggest to install a 404 or 466 diesel combine engine and keep the original engine for the future collector buyer to receive when they bought the tractor.

I'll second that motion. Was having similar
thoughts.

I just didn't want to face the wrath of certain
"purists". But for a working tractor, I'd go
diesel.

Leave the gas engine in it. I love my 4020 gas, I also have a side console 4020 gas as my loader tractor. I even got a spare gas engine out of a 7700 combine so I can keep it gas if I ever had a catastrophic failure. With a carb from Roberts Carb in Spencer Iowa really makes them a good tractor. It cuts the fuel usage and stops the plug fouling.

Well that's at least 2 of us that like gas tractors for certain jobs and can make them run right. LOL.

They do have their place and it isn't too hard to make them run right. I wouldn't trade mine for anything. The carb was the best thing for that tractor. Roberts Carb really knows what they are doing with them. I liked it so much I got another one for our 3020 sideconsole gas.

Do you have the Zenith cast iron carbs. ?

That's the final thing I did to ours to help it out.

Yes I do. Both the tractors had them on when I got it. I bought an updated Zienith from Roberts Carb. He figured out what it takes to make the carb better than original. Something about some extra drilled passages. It burns less gas and doesn't foul plugs. I have had the same set of plugs in for 2 years in the 4020 and it runs great. It was the best $1000 dollars I have spent for the carb. I also have electronic ignition.
