JD 2020 hydro fluid in crankcase

1966 John Deere 2020 - First I admit - I am 'tractor impaired'. This spring I changed the oil and topped off the hydraulic fluid.

Symptom 1: While disking the power steering was sticky and jerked a bit - added hydro fluid.

Symptom 2: While using box rake - power steering again -white smoke started to pour out of exhaust- thought I blew a head gasket- Back to the barn. Checked dipstick - completely covered - drained over five gallons from crankcase - Hydro fluid getting into crankcase.

I know nothing about hydraulics- Removed radiator - air filter (oil type) and a sealed cylinder that has two small hoses attached to it (I've no clue what that is) to get to pump- totally lost here - I see no leaks and no way hydro fluid can get into crankcase - any help greatly appreciated - I've got all winter to fix it - unheated very old barn but at least roof don't leak-

Early 2020 had power steering pump attached to timing gear cover. Bad seal would allow hyd. oil to enter engine.

Thanks a bunch - hate to be a bother but I've gotten to the pump - I haven't taken it off yet - is this a tough repair? - is the seal on the crankshaft? would I have to pull any gears of to replace it? If I just get a new or refurbished pump - is that just pretty much bolting the new one on?

Any advice appreciated and thanks again!

Depending on your tractors serial number here's the seal & gasket for the PS pump. The pump is bolted above CS on the front RH side of engine.

Thanx Guru! You've been Gureat. Will post as dilemma continues, I won't be able to take it off until next week. If I can figure out how to post a pic I will. Bringin this one into home shop to rebuild.

Hi I got the part and I have reassembled pump - the old seal WAS shot - I'd like to ask another question, maybe you can help with this. The tractor starts right up but if I'm out in the field and I shut it off - battery is dead - however if I park it in the barn overnight it starts right up the next day - I've replaced the alternator but that has not cured the problem. When it sits it starts when its hot it don't - any clue?

My guess is the starter solenoid is getting hot therefore not engaging until it cools off. Batteries don't normally go from "dead to charged" just by resting. Have you checked all 4 battery cable connections for cleanness & tightness? I would suggest to relocate batt negative cable connection from batt box to starter mounting bolt.

No but before you replace solenoid you might add a starter relay that will give more amps to the "S" terminal on the starter solenoid when ign switch is turned to start. JD added this type relay on some models to help starting problems

I may as well put a new solenoid on while I've got everything apart - and I might as well add the relay also (I say with confidence). Do you know what this (pic) is. Mine has 3 hoses that connect to the top nut part# 13 - I know the back hose is a flare fitting in this pic it only shows one nipple on the front - mine has two - one comes off the ps pump - I can't remember of the two which one connects to which nipple or if it matters.
