Long Axles on my 2520

I have a '72 2520D with long axles. I assume that was a factory option for adding duals. I have yet to come across another 2520 with that length axle. Does that make the tractor more rare or desirable or no?

I think you would find a few of these setups in areas that grow lots of produce like the southwest and Calfornia. I think there has been a few at the two-cylinder expo in the past. Do you have the F1500R rear center castings or the dished style rear wheel hubs? Not sure if it is worth more but it is different. Tom

It has the straight cast centers. I would have to go check the rear-end casting. Here's what it looks like. This is the way I bought it, but it will be getting a facelift soon. You have to be very careful backing it into the barn or even walking around the thing lol.

The Sept/Oct issue of Two Cylinder had a picture of one on page 22 owned by Ernie Goebel.I have seen this Expo Quality tractor and the axles are longer than what I refer to as long axles which are long enough for duals with 30in rows.Call Ernie at 563-599-4888 He will know. The real long axles make transporting on a trailer require a permit if the DOT happens to check. The real long axles usually had to do with vegetables as stated by Tom.

From viewing 2520 parts catalog it appears that a 2520 could have one of three different rear axle lengths. I would think not many 2520's had the longer axles.

After seeing your picture they look the same as Ernies tractor which has narrower tires You post some very nice tractors.I usually don't buy bigger than 4320s but your 4620 looks real sharp.I know the syngros bring less than 2520/4320 but seen a nice one at Mecums with huge rubber that sold in the mid 20s.The P.S. are pretty hot.Getting back to axles real long ones usually get shortened for the reasons you stated.

Most likely vegetables like the others said. If you could determine where it was shipped to originally you could know with more certainy. South jersey is full of tractors like that with long axles, lots of old truck farms down there. My brother has a 3010 gas single from wheel that has the longest axle you could get. All the way out it was 128" to the outside, had to spin the wheels in all the way and it is still 108". Had to put an extension on one side of the trailer to haul it home. Same place had a 2020 gas on 42" rubber with rack and pinion axles and the front end setup to match with a loader, was a sharp looking tractor.

Most of the 2510-2520 tractors I've seen have a longer axle,i thought it was standard.

(quoted from post at 23:04:11 01/09/15) In case anyone is wondering about the step I made. So much better than the factory ones

Thanks for posting! (I know it's off topic on your 2520). But that is a clean 4620 so wanted to see it, and I was just going to ask about the steps! I like it, it adds function yet retains the John Deere look.

Thanks. The top hinges up for storage underneath. It wasn't real pretty when I got it. Most ppl would probably pass or be afraid to put money into it. But I could tell it had potential despite its looks. Here's what it looked like when I got it. Just kinda nasty and plain with small tires all around.

I like the looks of that! We have a 4520 with the 4620 engine here on the farm. Last fall I bought a roll-guard and roof for it. What size rear rubber does your 4620 have? I need to fix some more oil leaks before we can paint ours. I even found a NOS hood for mine about 15 years before I even had the tractor. Tom

I have a 1970 2520 gas with long axles. I don't know which of the two longer axles it has. I could not find a picture. Paul

Dad's 4020 has the extra long axles and he hates them. He hits fence posts and the shed door with them. I have the short standard axles and wouldn't mind having the long ones. He wants to cut his off and I cringe. Grandpa bought it new with them and I just hate the idea of having them hacked on. He has started using my tractor to shred to avoid it.

I would cringe too at the thought of torched axles. Maybe you could swap whole axle housings.

New gen I find it interesting almost everytime I post a picture if there is one in background people reply about it.Ended up to be an interesting post with a simple question to start.

That's funny. Maybe there's something in the shed you'd want to ask about.

I like the tractors with the long axles too. I want to put long axles on both my 4020's because I just believe they look better. My dad has the mid length axles on his 4020 so he can run duals on 30" rows but I really want the extra long ones.

I would say you have a strain of NewGen fever and the only cure is finding nicer ones than you have so it looks like there is no cure for you.I don't know why for sure but they just have more appeal to someone like myself as they are simple and have a style of their own.Its fun to chat back and forth on this forum. My problem is I like to sell them too.I see theres a 3020 gas HFWA syngro in photo ads .If original I have only seen one at Expo.If I had kept all I have bought it would have been fun to see them all but I would have been broke and have to had a sale.I don't keep track but could have between 100/150 the lowest hour ones were a 1700hr.4320 a 2543hr 2520 2691hr.4020/2452hr.4320.

Great looking tractors in your collection there. Send me an email, I have a couple of items that may be of interest to you.

Yes I'm a lost cause. I wish I could keep every tractor I have had over the years. But sometimes you gotta pay the bills. These new plastic/electronic tractors don't really do much for me. Pretty soon the gov't will have control of the gps on those so they can keep track of you. I would be willing to bet that most of mine will be operational long after these brand new ones are in the scrapyard. Will an 8000R tractor still be working 40 or 50 years from now? Would be interesting to see. I have a feeling that once the harnesses and sensors rot or get chewed by mice and not available anymore, it will be hard to keep them going. Can you imagine trying to find a hood for one 20 or 30 years from now? It seems like todays tractors are more disposable than ever.

When importing to the uk we usually have to have the axels cut. Depending on who does it you can either get a clean cut or a horrible gas cut. We ask that they send the cut pieces with the tractor so if we want we can weld it back on to tidy it up a bit - and cover the weld with a bit of the centre.

(quoted from post at 10:57:40 01/10/15) You should be able to click on "send email" in the lower RH part of my post.

I must be blind. I see in the lower left where is says profile but no email listed. I see where sideconsole4020guy has a tab for 'email' and so does 4020_1966. You may need to edit your profile and add the email address and make sure to check the Preferences box so it shows up.

I think if you look at the posts in classic view you will be able to email me. For some reason my equipment hates modern view on this site, won't even let me log in. Sorry for the hassles.

Okay I did manage to find it in classic. Swear I looked yesterday and didn't see it. If Classic view was the only option, I swear I wouldn't come here--it drives me crazy.

AMEN Buddy Classic view resembles the dark ages.
