Guys if you had to choose what would you pick??? I need a tractor for some food plots little plowing discing and maybe mowing. If you had to choose between 4010 diesel or a 730 diesel what would it be? I sold my buddy my 730 and got a 4010. He said I could buy it back lol. I think. So just as far as value, coolness, or whatever what would you choose. Thanks

Either one is too much for food plot work. Lotsa guys just use 4 wheelers. You wouldn't even get them to operating temp.

Now if you were gonna do a serious full days work, the 4010 is far and away the better tractor to take to the field.

For the CSA my dad sponsored last year, they used my 420U with a 3pt disc. I think it was a whole acre, maybe 2...

I have atvs but I like tractors. My gpa was a deere dealer and
that old green stuff is just cool. I guess both tractors have pto
and 3 pt and will do what I want for food plots. I guess my
question should have been which one is more sought after for
collecting. In another 10 years what one is probably goin to be
worth more? I wanted a new gen series because I think they
are the nicest looking. But, a 730 is a classic too. Any chores
done with this tractor will be like once a year. Otherwise it's job
will be maybe a pull or parade and just looking good!

If it was a lot of work... the 4010. But being you are talking food plots, mostly playing around, I'd pick the 730.

730s are fun to play with!

As for value if in like condition not a lot of difference probably 4010 has more .As far as operation I would prefer 4010D but honestly have never owned a 2CYL.as we switched from IH in 1961 to the JD 4010.I sell some small implements to food plot guys and most have smaller FWA diesels about 50/60 H.P.It appears to be a fun thing that people enjoy to get away from their normal job.

My 2 cents is to pick the one you personally enjoy owning the best. At the end of the day that should be what tractor collecting is all about.

Asking us to predict the future is nothing more than a guess. If I was an expert at predicting the future I would make myself rich predicting stocks and likely not be posting on here at all.

I agree with some other posters the New generations are becoming very collectable cause people like to collect what they grew up operating. That said, there are decades worth of production tractors for people to satisfy their new generation jollies in models 4010, 3010, 2510, 4020, 3020, 2520 etc.

In comparison, the US model 730 was made 2 years only. Even though 2 cylinder collecting is dropping some it will never go away completely and there are only 2 years worth of production to satisfy whatever that demand falls to. Ever go to a tractor show, people who grew up in the city or in town walk right on by every new generation tractor they see. Those look and sound like a brand new tractor to them. They will stop and watch almost all the 2 cylinders cause they so fascinated with those putt putts. Plus the 730 is pre-cursor to the New generation tractor models as well as maintaining the 2 cylinder heritage all rolled into one.

As you can see, Arguments can be made either way. Collect what you enjoy owning and using for your uses. Owning something I can not stand hoping it might someday increase in value simply does not sound very enjoyable to me. Heck if you are this undecided, buy the 730 back and keep them both. Once can never have too many tractors.

Rincon for collector value probably favor 4010 but with 730 being last 2cyl they sell well.At Mecums last auction the nice rare 2CYLs were in demand. For coolness the 4010 as they were the start of the NewGen but the late 20 series is much more popular.I happen to like what I started farming with so 4020s and the 1206IH will always be my favorites.I guess with your memories of your family I would pick whatever you like.

Get that 730 back if you can, sounds like you are stuck with the 4010, you can make the most of both. Can remember not too long ago the 730 D being voted the most popular one to collect, no we are not all dead yet.

I grew up on two cylinders and the 720 was my "dream tractor". Back then, the fields were a half mile long and you would be out all day in the field. When I finally bought a super nice 730 about 10 years ago and shortly after a 4020, I found that on my 5 acres the 730 seemed really clumsy in comparison to the 4020. It also seems the 730 is a lot more expensive to repair and maintain (except for fuel consumption) when something goes wrong.

owned and worked both, my vote is for the 730, way easier to work on and half the price repairs. local JD MEGA store can't rebuild early style remotes, steering valves and don't have to correct tools for rockshaft vale repair. a 4010/4020 will burn 5-6 gallons an hour. The only thing i can give a new generation tractor is super easy/ responsive power steering. DON'T plumb in a hyd motor to your remotes on the new generation or you will have an hyd melt down. foot on the clutch and trans pump stops and you starve main pump after 30-+40 seconds. I remember getting on my 4020 for the first time and going to the field and thinking what is all the hype about?? My 730d does and pulls everything that this does.

The 730 I sold my 730 after I bought a 3020 powershift and a 4430pfwd needed a new silo-unloader and milk had taken a plunge The day it went stood in yard with an envelope full of cash watching it go down the road looked at the kids and said "what did I just do?" That was 20 years ago and I still miss it

You have driven and owned both, so you know which one you prefer. The decision probably depends on the price and condition of the 730-D, $3000 or $10,000+?

The 730 might be more of a high value collector tractor while the 4010 might be a more practical working tractor that won't appreciate as much extra value.

Myself, I'm 59 and grew up on New Generation JD tractors along with other brands. So to me, driving two cylinder JD tractors seem like clumsy dinosaurs with odd, inconvenient controls. Guys my age who grew up with two cylinders like them.
