720 pony engine

I took apart the pony on my 720 diesel. Only to find it is pretty much destroyed. Broken rod. Crank is scored piston hit the head. It's a mess?? Should I find another engine? Can anyone point me to a good engine? I kind of want to keep it original or is that just nuts for the price?? Opinions are appreciated. Thanks.

Dan,

I had to replace the pony on my 80 a year or two ago. Contact Ryan Lind of Foreverdeere . They rebuild pony motors(they bought the business from Paul and Gten of deeresofyesteryear) and do a very good job. They advertise in Green Magazine.

Ryan even started the motor on a test stand for me before I decided which one I wanted (he had more than one to choose from). Give him a call 812-987-3982 or email [email protected].

Just got done doing my the pony on my 70. I have right around $1000 in it excluding labor. I bought an 820 pony for some parts for $200 in that $1000. I put in new rods in it from H&J machining, and the rest were used parts. Between the 2 engines, I had enough pistons and liners that were good. My cam and lifters were junk also. I used the valve train from the 820. I honed the liners and reringed the pistons, and rebuilt the water pump. I tore it down to a bare block to clean out all the metal/ aluminum in the oil galleys. It took a lot more time to do than I thought, but learned a lot in the process.

Wish I had the skills and knowledge to do that. Everything is always a first time experience for me. Better for me to let someone else do the hard part.

So did you turn the crank? Did you recondition the heads? Did you count the cost of the gasket set? Did you rebuild the ignition box? Did you put new thrust washers and seals in it?

No, I didn't turn the crank. The heads I tore apart and were near perfect. I bead blasted them and clean them up completely. Guides were tight, and valve faces and seats were great. ALL seals and gaskets were new as well as points, condensors, coils, and plugs. Liners and pistons were all used. I also tore the carburetor apart and cleaned it out too. I reused those gaskets and seals. I'm not sure what you are looking for a $ amount. I thought I did a fairly thorough job. I starts right up and runs good.
