430 grooves on rod journals

I think I know the answer but have to ask. Looking at my crank the bearings look good almost new but the crank has small grooves in it. Do I need to take the crank and pistons to a machine shop?

Depends on what you call small, why it's apart and what you're planning on doing with it.

I would check the journals with a caliper for roundness, plastiguage for tolerance and go from there. Minor grooves can be tamed with sandpaper and crocus shop rolls.

Blueprinting a 60 year old low speed tractor engine is a waste of time and money unless it works every day and you plan on keeping it that way. JMO

A lot depends on the Eye looking at the journal...
Your fingernail will detect one or two 0.0001" and will be "catching" on the grooves long before they reach 0.001"
You can polish your Journals with Crocus Cloth strips (oiled), wrapped with a continual wrap of cotton clothes line.
Leave the line long enough that you can pull on either end and Spin the Crocus Cloth..
Don't worry, it WILL Polish but will not take enough off the measure..just add some oil once in a while. One piece will most likely polish a couple Journals..
