John Deere Hydraulic Pump Drive Coupler 3020 Installation

Hello folks -

I have a late 60's JD 3020 that the hydraulic pump shaft coupler stripped out on. I have purchased a new one from our local JD dealer but can not get the part to line up correctly to slide onto the pump shaft. What am I missing? Should I be removing the radiator and or the hyd oil cooler to make enough room to line up the new coupler to the existing pump shaft? Doesn't seem like it should be a complicated project.

Thanks for any comments.

be sure that the "squeeze bolts" on the pump end of the shaft are loose, turn the coupler to where you have the most clearance on the top, if it won't line up then you may need to remove the drive lugs on the pulley to let it go on,, it is possible to change this way for sure..with out removing the radiator..

Thank guys - here is where I'm at: I took the old coupler out, it had about two inches of stripped spines in the end. The pump shaft still looks fine.

I picked up a new part, I have not put the squeeze bolts in yet because of clearance issues with the bottom of the radiator. I am finding that no matter where and how I position the coupler, I can't get it to line up straight enough to slide onto the pump shaft.

The coupling studs on the crank are not interfering as I have turn the crank 90 degrees.

I am wondering if there is some trick or tool that I should be doing to get the new splines to slide onto the old shaft. As it looks now, I will need to loosen the pump from the frame or move the radiator and or oil cooler to gain enough vertical clearance to get the new coupler on. Or I could get someone to machine out the first 1/8" or 1/4" of the coupling splines to get it enough forward clearance from the bottom of the radiator.

A couple of things could be happening here, 1 the radiator rubber bushings could be gone, letting it set too low, you will need to prove this out, not enough clearance it could wear a hole in the bottom,,you can also loosen the radiator and wedge it up a bit, I use wood shims.2 the coupler could be a bit longer for some reason, you can unscrew the lugs and put them back in after its in place..It will go in..

Thanks again for all the tips and I'm sorry it took me this long to get back to this thread - life got in the way for a bit....

There were no bushings under the radiator mounting points....Good call, I loosened them up propped it up and the coupler slid right on as it should. I have ordered the bushings and will put them on once I get them.

Next project - Oliver Super 55 Gas!, Kids, cows, etc...

Thank you again folks!
