Anyone know how many 4040,powershift,open station, hfwa tractors were built? Someone on another farming discussion site owns one and is wanting to know.
Thanks,Jim

Well, I would have guessed 0, but now I guess
we know there is 1. It seems 4040s are
uncommon enough in the PS version, let alone
without a cab, and then throw in the HFWA.

I'm curious... what neighborhood was it sold
in?

20 years ago, when I was in NY state, it seemed
like there were quite a few HFWA tractors, at
least 20 series. They were almost never seen
in my neighborhood (WI).

Here's some photos of the 4040

WE had a 4230 open station quad range no ROPS with paint wore off fender from my little britches .If it was moving my daddy was driving and I WAS GOING TOO.

Probably no record but open station tractors [ 30/40] were available as we had one but no P.S.or HFWA.Like the short pipe and hearing protectors in second pictures.I actually sold one a year or two ago but had cab and 359T motor HFWA but was a Europeon model. Some the Europeons had the newer MFD that people don't care for on first 50series that were updated in 1984.Sorry I had sold seat before you called .Good to hear from you Tx Jim.
I would say rare tractor.

I was having difficulty loading photos last evening I guess from Christmas online shoppers so I'll add it now.Well it seems I'm still having photo loading problems so I'll try Classic view.

The tractor appears to have a name. Thanks for posting picture as we sure know of one.Kinda like the LP gas power shift HFWA 4020 or LP equipted same.I have sold a few HFWA tractors and their true value is on a collector tractor. It might change but the $3K+ plus it adds to 20 series is $0 on 30/40 series. All the originalJD HFWA or MFWD Coleman on IHs were not the best.We have came a long way since.

Wasn't sometime during the 40 series that the rops became mandatory?
The Chrome noise maker poking through the hood doesn't thrill me however.
1976 was the start of the 40 series and 1985 was half way through the 50 series.

from http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00019495.htm dated January 29, 1993

ROPS first became available as optional equipment on farm tractors in 1971; tractors manufactured before 1971 generally were not designed to accommodate the addition of ROPS. In 1976, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) required employers to provide ROPS and safety belts for all employee-operated tractors manufactured after October 25, 1976. ** Since 1985, as a result of voluntary agreements by tractor manufacturers, virtually all new tractors sold in the United States have been equipped with ROPS and safety belts.

** This OSHA standard (CFR 29 section 1928.51) exempts tractors used in certain circumstances (e.g., where vertical clearances may be limited, such as in orchards or inside buildings) and does not apply to family farms. Moreover, the standard is not enforced on farms that employ fewer than 11 employees.

There is at least one way up here in Maine neighbor has one with a loader on it used to use it pushing silage nice unit

(quoted from post at 19:27:41 12/20/14) There is one advertised on agdealer.com 4040 2WD power shift no cab, as one of 146.

It's a well known fact that 71 percent of statistics found on the internet are made up.

I thought I would bring this back as I'm still looking for the one picture proving there are at least 2 in this configuration.

I am the owner of this 4040 and thanks to Tx Jim for posting it here many years ago. My grandfather purchased it new in November '77 from Zahm & Matson, Falconer, NY. To this day the service manager still remembers it.

For some up to date pictures of it still working visit lindellhaysales.net

I haven't completely figured out posting pictures on this site yet as I have had several failed attempts.
