I may have asked this before? but I can't remember.....must be getting old!! I have a JD 4440 and I am trying to pull a Glenco 9 shank soil saver chisel. When conditions are good, its fine, but sometimes its a struggle for traction. I have 2 sets of the bolt on weights on the rear and I have the front weight bracket, but no weights on the front. Should I add more weight? How much? Thanks.

4440 should have power to spare on a 9 shank. Proper ballasting involves adding weight to both the front and rear. Your operators manual will have a very good section on how to do it properly.

1. How good is the rear rubber? Are they properly inflated? Overinflated tires will have less traction.

2. Is there fluid in the tires? If not, I don't think 2 sets is enough. I have a set of 450 pounders on the inside of my 4430. You may want to find a set.

3. Does the front end feel light? Does it slide more than steer when the fuel tank is low? If so, front weights are definitely recommended. Otherwise, they help, but not as much are wheel weights.
